The Avoidance Habit
Often people don’t recognize the signs of the avoidance habit. Perhaps you are a drama queen that creates drama as a distraction so you won’t have to deal with a particular issue. You might be living in clutter so deep you’ve lost yourself. The avoidance habit hits young, so it may be so ingrained that you don’t fully recognize all the ways you actually procrastinate. Start out by taking a large or complicated task and breaking it down into smaller parts that you can accomplish easier. It’s important to bear in mind that the most difficult or complex tasks are simply just a series of smaller jobs. Be gentle with yourself when you decide to try and kick the avoidance habit.
Generally speaking, we procrastinate in order to avoid something. Often that something is an uncomfortable feeling. The procrastination habit morphs into avoidance and disorganization which will rob you of time, peace of mind, and health.
Your capacity to function effectively will be greatly reduced. While the avoidance habit is a hard one to break, ignoring things won’t help. Some honest self-assessment and an achievable plan of attack can overcome the avoidance habit.
Unfortunately, the avoidance habit can also keep you locked in self-destructive patterns, which will limit your success. If your habit manifests itself as being chronically late, make a verbal commitment to someone else about improving your time management skills and your desire to avoid procrastinating.
Ask yourself, what are the habits you have that are keeping you from achieving your goals? Which ones seem to become magnified during the holiday season? Jot them down and let them become your New Year’s Resolutions. Allow others to become involved in your efforts and this will bring in an element of accountability. You’ll feel more of a commitment if you know others are watching.
Don’t be afraid to seek out help. Let’s say you have a problem with clutter. Consider having a professional organizer in to help you or even a friend or relative who has great organization skills. You’ll need someone with a teaching spirit who will not condemn you, but help you get on the right track.
Sit down and map out a plan to manage your life more effectively. If a deadline is looming, make sure you allot time each day to work on the project so it doesn’t sneak up on you in the final hours or days. Learn to ask for help when you’re feeling overwhelmed or overworked.
Another tool for success is meditation. Meditation will teach you mindfulness which is a way to be present with your feelings. Most people act out their feelings or suppress them. Once you learn to be present with your feelings, especially negative feelings, you will realize that you are not your feelings. You can acknowledge them without acting on them. The habit of avoidance will go away as you become comfortable with your feelings.
Don’t wait until you’ve accomplished the ultimate goal. It’s okay to reward yourself for your successes along the way. Make sure the reward is something that doesn’t indulge a bad habit! Buy a book by your favorite author and take the time to read it. Have a candlelight bubble bath. Make a commitment to stop the avoiding habit, and you’ll find more time as well as being more relaxed, productive, and less stressed in the process.

Avoidance habit seems to be an act
Replyof being irresponsible fellow.
Bigger responsibilities are great if we start it with
willing acceptance.
Yes, if we are handling big responsibility we can break it up into
pieces of works than is much easier for us to deal with.

This is a vey good article indeed. And so, so true. I was guilty of this myself in my younger years, always putting things off until the last minute. But as I got older I started to realize the problems it was causing me and I did exactly as you advised in this article – break down larger tasks into smaller one’s!
It’s suprising how quickly it becomes second nature to “just get on with it”.
