There are a few key steps you need to do before you go under the needle. Some medical doctors will use acupuncture in their every day practice, and normally must have between 200 and 300 hours of practice before being able to perform on a patient. Those who specialize in acupuncture, however, are commonly required to have 2,000 to 3,000 hours of practice before they can even consider practicing on a patient.
Tons of people claim that they can perform acupuncture, and although some may be able to, only a few are licensed professionals that will treat your body with respect and help you achieve optimum health.
About 40 states have established training standards for acupuncture certification, but states have varied requirements for obtaining a license to practice acupuncture. Before you call around, search for the specific requirements in your state that deal with a licensed acupuncturist. A good place to start is the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. Their list is not 100% inclusive of all practitioners but it will give you a place to start.
If you are seeing any kind of holistic practitioner such as an herbalist, massage practitioner, or naturopathic doctor, they may be able to recommend someone or even have an acupuncturist on staff. Also, a friend, relative, or co-worker may have a recommendation. If not, it’s okay – you’ll just have to do a little more shopping around.
Call around and make appointments with businesses you think sound best – not for acupuncture, but to come in and see the facility. Make sure that they use sterile, pre-packaged needles, and that the area is completely clean. The typical expectations for a doctor's office should apply--clean and comfortable.
Always use your sense. If you don’t feel comfortable with the professional, , find another professional. It’s your body, and your rules – don’t be pushed into anything, and make sure that you’re getting the best possible service.
