Learn MoreNatural Treatments for Hair Loss In Men
Why do some men lose their hair and can it be treated? While baldness in men can be genetic, it is also known that it can be attributed to disease. Excessive weight gain or loss within a close period of time is also a factor. An iron deficiency is also a cause of hair loss in men. However, many believe that hair loss is neither due to an illness nor a medical condition. In the United States, one in four men begin to go bald by the age of thirty. In addition, by the age of sixty, the odds are considerably worse — two out of three men go bald.
As men age, their hair gradually becomes thinner. As the hair thins, the oil increases which causes an insufficiency of the hair root. This ultimately contributes to hair loss. According to research, a hair follicle’s normal growth rate is five years before the hair is replaced by new hair growth. In male pattern baldness, when a hair falls out a new one does not start to grow. Usually occurring above the forehead, thus revealing a receding hairline, it works its way back to the crown of the head. Thus, a bald spot increases in size until the entire top of the head is bald. The only hair remaining is on the sides of the head.
Traditional treatment of hair loss in men includes Minoxidil, which is applied directly to the scalp, helps slow the balding in most men. In fact, it begins new hair growth. While this medication only works for younger men, who are just beginning the balding phase, it takes about a year to determine if the medication was successful. Another medication is Finasteride, which taken orally, blocks the testosterone which causes hair loss. This medication has shown to be effective in stopping hair loss in men, and start new hair growth. The results of this medication may also take a year before any progress is shown.
If you want to go the natural route, there are several things you can do. Consider the following –
Nutritional Supplements
- High doses of inositol can stimulate hair growth in some individuals
- Choline acts together with insitol. If you take inositol, take an equal amount of choline.
- Vitamin E is necessary for skin and scalp health, including the hair follicle.
- Selenium assists in the utilization of Vitamin E
Herbal Treatments
- Saw palmetto has been reported to cause some reversal of male pattern baldness. Choose an extract containing 90% essential fatty acids and sterols and take 160 milligrams twice daily.
- Fo-ti is a Chinese herb that many men have used in tea to arrest hair loss and slow graying.
Homeopathy
- Alumina 200 or 200c is for hair that falls out and a scalp that is itchy and dry. One dose 3x a week, stop for two weeks, then repeat.
- Natrum muriaticum is for hair loss accompanied by craving for salt. Take one dose of 200x or 200c twice a week, stop for a week, then repeat.
- Phosphoricum acidum helps with thinning hair accompanied with fatigue. Take one dose 30x or 15c three times daily for three days, stop for two weeks, then repeat.
Accupressure
Chinese medicine teaches that the kidneys influence the scalp and hair. A professional will be able to zero in on the organ causing the problem.
Aromatherapy

The formula given above can be very effective. It was originally tested as a treatment for alopecia, a very specific type of hairloss. However it has been used by many (both men and women) to treat hairloss from other causes, and found effective in many cases. Especially useful for hairloss following Chemotherapy.
If you don’t want to invest in all six ingredients, the premixed formula is available online at http://www.naturesgift.com/aromatherapyskincare.htm#alopecia under the product name “Stimulating Scalp Oil.”
