Overview of Acupuncture

AcupunctureUse the term acupuncture and most people think of needles. In Western medicine we associate needles with painful injections, but acupuncture itself is painless. Most people are incredulous at the thought of being cured by poking needles in the skin. How can that possibly work?

Acupuncture is, in the strictest of terms, is technique of inserting extremely thin needles into the skin at very specific points of the body. These points are referred to as pathways, or meridians for energy, and inserting the needles into the skin on these pathways balances unblocks the flow of energy allowing you to live a healthier, fuller life.

What are some conditions that acupuncture can help with? Well, the most positive results are experienced with such conditions as

  • Arthritis
  • Chronic pain
  • Heart disease
  • Chronic disorders

There are some claims that acupuncture has relieved some forms of paralysis, cancer, diabetes, and reduced the serious effects of a stroke in many people – these cases are rare, but there are reports of them. Acupuncture has many, many more benefits than listed here, of course, and you should speak with a licensed acupuncturist about your specific problem to see what options are available for you.

The workings of acupuncture was first discovered and utilized by the Chinese. Their use of the tools of acupuncture can be traced back as far as the 1st Millennium BCE and later, showing that while sterilization and ‘clean needles’ weren’t available, the basic pathways in the body were there, and that it was truly helping people with their pain, disease, and more.

Different forms of acupuncture can be found in Korean and Japanese history, and while the styles of the acupuncture are always slightly different, the main idea is the same – to promote a healthy, happy life.

Could three separate cultures have it wrong?!

Now, while the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans all still use acupuncture to help cure disease, blood clots, strokes, and more, the ideals have been passed to the Western world. In America and Europe, the idea has caught on as more and more people realize that acupuncture has true health benefits.

Finding a good acupuncturist isn’t going to make you take out a second mortgage, but you might have to carry a brown bag lunch for a few weeks. Your acupuncturist will examine your tongue, take your pulse, and tell you if your condition can be helped through acupuncture. If so, you will begin a course of treatment. You may also be given herbal supplements to take as well. You should start to see a gradual improvement for your condition.

All illnesses stem from a deficiency of essential ki of the zang organs. Localized
symptoms appear when heat and cold arise due to a deficiency of ki, blood, and fluids
(pathological deficiency) caused by the combination of any of a number of possible factors in
combination with the underlying deficiency. The majority of localized symptoms that patients
convey as their chief complaint are the areas affected by cold and heat. That is to say, it is
common for the area of the chief complaint to lie along the meridian(s) that should be used
    for the local treatment.
For instance, suppose that a patient presents with a complaint of stiff shoulders due to age
(i.e., fifty-year-old’s shoulder). This ailment is commonly caused by Liver deficiency.
Blockage of the meridians in the area of the shoulder joint gives rise to it being the specific
area of the chief complaint. So, first of all you should diagnose whether or not the problem is
due to Liver deficiency, and at the same time you must assess which meridian(s) have
blockage that may be causing the difficulty in raising the arm. In order to do that you should
palpate each of the channels and have the patient raise the arm. But, before having the patient
raise the arm, ask exactly where the pain is felt. This should be done with precision,
politeness, and gentleness. This information will help in determining the meridian(s) and
points to be used for the local treatment.

Besides all those mentioned diseases, acupuncture can do more. For example, clinical practice found that acupuncture can help a lot for depression. Of course, the treatment must be based on the right diagnosis, which involves the syndrome differentiation. Anyway, it is another topic about acupuncture.
