Super Tea: Pu-erh

Posted in Holistic Health |

Cast Iron Tea PotDuring the Ming and Qing dynasties of China, Pu-erh (pronounced poo-air) tea became so popular it was used as currency. Compressed into cakes for easy transport to places as far away as Burma, transporters discovered the tea tasted better when it arrived at its destination, and today aged Pu-erh is still preferable.

Pu-erh is a true tea, as it comes from a genus of the Camellia plant and is loosely divided into two types–sheng (green or raw) and shu (ripe or aged). If you’re new to Pu-erh tea, try the shu first as sheng is hard on the stomach of a newbie.

The traditional culture around Pu-erh says it’s good for curing hangovers. In the West it’s said to aid in weight loss and is used in many diet formulations; however, it’s one verifiable health benefit is a big one.

Chinese doctors reported clinical experiments in the 1970s in which drinking pu-erh was shown to lower cholesterol levels. French scientists were able to duplicate these results. As late as 2002, a study published in Preventive Medicine shows that drinking Pu-erh measurably reduced cholesterol levels.

The tea is still sold in traditional cakes, but you may be able to find it already cut to suit Western tastes. I suggest you buy some quality loose tea from a reputable vendor. That way, if you don’t like it, you’re not stuck with an entire cake. If you do like it, you can always start buying it in cakes.

Pu-erh is an acquired taste for many people. Often people trying it for the first time say the taste is earthy or reminds them of mushrooms. As I said, it’s an acquired taste so give it a few tries. Pu-erh is normally brewed in the same small kettle over and over. The tea is known to last for many infusions and each one tastes slightly different. You’re wasting tea if you only brew it one time.

What’s your next move, after having read this post?

To enjoy the real taste of tea you should never add sugar or milk. I love drinking all kinds of tea including herbal teas that do not actually originate from tea tree but are very healthy too. Tea can also wake you up in the morning much better than coffee but it is healthier. So everybody drink tea!

Drinking tea is something i do very often but i must admit i do add sugar and milk. I have not tried it without milk before. First thing i do every morning is boil the kettle but i began to have doubts when drinking hot tea was linked to oesophagus cancer. So as well at tea being good for you its also rather bad for you.

Yes, Pu-erh has probiotics, and that is so wonderful. I love taking Pu-erh early in the morning and before going to bed. I also love yogurt because it has probiotics. And I am taking probiotic supplements everyday.

My girlfriend is the one responsible that I finally quit smoking and beer drinking, and she pushes me to live a healthy lifestyle too. I am so proud of her.

One morning as I wake up, she prepares a Pu-erh tea for me, she told me that it taste good and it has probiotics and anti-oxidants… that made me love her more.

We are always in search of healthy and delicious food stuff. All a person needs to do is learn how to cook, and that person could be an effective health advocate.

I was raised to love tea and have a cast iron teapot brought to America by my grandfather in the early 1900’s. Over the years I bought many kinds of teapots at antique stores and ultimately started selling them online and at malls, etc.

I take tea bags of my favorite tea and put them in a gallon jar with warm, not boiling water and then place the jar where the sunlight hits it all day long. I let it sit for several hours and then I remove the tea bags and put new ones in the jar for another soak of several hours. The tea turns very dark, hence the “Black Lightning” name. I then put some in a cast iron kettle for heating – I like it very hot with some milk and sugar. Perhaps purists would say that I am diminishing certain tastes, aromas, etc., but to me the tea tastes great! Give it a try!

There are so many new varieties of tea these days, plus it seem like hundreds of different varieties of herbals available. Sometimes it is difficult to decide which one to drink.
